So why do we bother rating beer?

OK, here’s a quick quiz for you – grab a piece of paper and a pen and note down a list of about 25 pubs in our area that are worthy of going into the next Good Beer Guide. The first 10 to 15 are easy, aren’t they, but what about the rest? I bet you are struggling – I know we always do!

So this is where every one of our readers can help us out. Over the year, branch members and visitors from other branches use our 11 point scoring system to rate the quality of beer in each pub in our area, and yes, there are well over 200 pubs in our area that serve Real Ale so its no easy task!

So the next time you visit a pub in the Chesterfield and District CAMRA Branch area, be it your local hostelry or one of the hidden gems in the middle of nowhere, all we ask of you is to note down a few things: Pub name, location, date of your visit, and finally the quality of the beer:

Once you have rated the beer, there are several ways to get them to us: Use the form below - email the information to webmaster@innspire.org.uk; send the information to: Alun Waterhouse, 59 Spencer Street, Chesterfield. S40 4SD; SMS text the information to 07921 614 346; or hand it to any of the Chesterfield CAMRA Committee in whatever format you like (on the back of a beer mat or even on paper!)

In 2006 we received over 2,500 ratings which have helped to shape next years Good Beer Guide – this year, with your help we can make the task even easier and you may even stop our committee from drawing blood or from going grey…

The ratings explained

0 Undrinkable - take it back
1 Very Poor & Going Off - can't finish it
2 Very Poor - somehow drink it but wouldn't have another, even if someone else is paying
3 Poor - out of a sense of duty (perhaps in a large party) you sup in halves
4 Below Average - wouldn't choose to have another, unless it's put in front of you
5 Average - okay without being inspiring
6 Above Average - a pleasant drink, you'd stay for another unless there was a better option
7 Good - definitely worth another pint (or two)
8 Very Good - happy to stay for a few more & seek out the beer next time
9 Excellent - probably the best you're likely to find
10 Unsurpassable - a truly exceptional pint, best for a long time, a rare achievement and rarely given by seasoned drinkers...
