Matlock & Dales Out & About Spring 2008

Matlock and Dales sub-branch visited Hartington recently, and are seen here outside the Charles Cotton Hotel - a recent contender for Chesterfield Branch Spring Pub of the Season. The sub-branch also enjoyed visits to the Duke of York in Elton, the Red Lion in Birchover and the Flying Childers in Stanton in the Peak.

Matlock & Dales Pub of the Year 2008

Congratulations are due to David and Marilyn Bentley, along with all their hardworking staff, on winning the inaugural Matlock & Dales Pub Of The Year award.

Nestling in this characterful Peak District village, the Old Bowling Green has been in their ownership for over 18 years, and bears witness to their high standards; their real ales and food have always been of high quality.

With so many good breweries in our area, David’s recent decision to source all his beers from within a 25-mile radius of the ‘Green’ has proved to be successful. Bradfield, Peakstone Rock and Thornbridge - to name but a few - all feature regularly on the four handpumps, alongside the ‘house ale’: Winster Wallop, brewed by Abbeydale. Real cider and Moravka from Taddington complete the line-up.

Matlock & Dales Brampton Brewery Visit

On March 28th, about twenty MAD folk made it here, and if any couldn’t find it, we mustn’t mock the afflicted, must we?

The visit was ably organised by Peter Boitoult, who was this week officially recognised by the Matlock Mercury as Social Secretary - and as my Granny used to tell me, if it’s in the local newspaper, it must be true!

The brewery lives in a business park off Chatsworth Road - not very park-like, and having, in the Chesterfield rain, the un-matey look that usually marks such places. Inside, though, was a pleasant surprise, with a pub-like bar and a warm welcome from Chris Radford, John Hirst and his wife Jenny, Chris’s sister.

After we’d had time to fortify ourselves with Golden Bud (light, golden and hoppy), Wasp Nest (a premium ale), and Impy Mild, Chris gave us an amusing and interesting talk. He enlightened us about the previous Brampton brewery -1839 (or earlier) to 1955, the establishment of the new one, the way pubs choose beer under the SIBA Scheme, and - to general gloom - the rise in beer prices.

This was followed by an excellent supper of pies and Cornish pasties. We had, all in all, a really good evening. Good luck to the Brewery and its five directors, say I!

Matlock & Dales Winter Pub of the Season

At the January sub-Branch meeting, the Temple Hotel at Matlock Bath was announced as the winner of the MAD Winter 2007/08 Pub of the Season Award.

Congratulations to Chris (pictured right receiving the award from sub-Branch Chairman, Colin Fearnley), Mel, Rachael and the rest of the team for this fantastic turnaround in the last two years of ownership.

It was also decided at the meeting (which was held at the much improved Sycamore at Matlock) that there would be two ‘wildcard’ entries alongside the previous winners to complete the line-up for the MAD Pub of the Year Award: Plough (Two Dales), Thorn Tree (Matlock), Temple Hotel (Matlock Bath) and Old Bowling Green (Winster). Votes may be cast by email (boitoult@btopenworld.com with CAMRA membership number) or in person at our meeting on 20th March at the Boat Inn, Cromford.

MAD social events may also be listed in the Chesterfield CAMRA Yahoo Groups calendar
