Chesterfield Pubs Book
A brand new edition of
CHESTERFIELD PUBS by local historian John Hirst is now
available. When the booklet first appeared 9 years ago
it proved to be immensely popular, giving a wealth of
information on the town’s pubs. The original version
(out of print for some time now) covered only the town
centre and Stonegravels.
There have been many changes since: 6 closures in the
town centre alone and another 7 pubs have changed their
names. John has completely updated and expanded the
format to embrace surrounding areas of the town, namely:
Brampton, Holymoorside, Old Brampton, Newbold, Old & New
Whittington, Whittington Moor, Brimington, Calow and
Hasland; thus doubling the number of entries to almost
300 pubs, past & present.
The booklet has new photos, illustrations and maps of
Chesterfield town centre and Brampton with numbered
references to the pubs. The comprehensive index cross
references around 80 name changes, making it the ideal
way to settle those arguments (over a pint) about the
pubs of yester-year.
The 56 page booklet is available from Chesterfield
Tourist Information Centre, Chesterfield Museum, selected bookshops
and local pubs - and great value, too, at the cover
price of £3.95. For further info, please
contact any member of the
committee.

The
Good Cider Guide
Meanwhile,
CAMRA’s Good Cider Guide was launched at the end of
October, packed with information on every producer in
the UK and highlighting all the best places in which to
buy and sample the nation’s best ciders. The book is
divided into counties and contains maps, listings of
producers and over 550 cider outlets. It is priced at

Whilst we enjoyed draught cider & perry, the
important market for bottled products was highlighted as
CAMRA launched a new competition to find Britain’s best
bottled ‘real’ cider and perry. The blind tasting of the
National Champion Bottled Cider and Bottled Perry will
be announced along with the National Draught Cider and
Perry Champion in May 2006.
