Birth of a Brewery (Part 3)
A pictorial record of the first brew of Bakewell Best Bitter, Monday February 7th 2005.

While the copper slowly fills, out come the scales to measure the traditional English hops, Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger ready for the boil.

Another task while the copper fills, is to skim yeast off a previous test/calibration brew, total concentration required!

Copper now full and up to the boil, the first hops are added.

Finings trials continue on the test brew, while in the background the yeast “chills out”.

Building work is still in progress round the back, but the flume of steam indicates the full rolling boil going on inside.

Meanwhile, the farmer arrives to collect the spent grain which must be dug out of the steamy mash tun.

While Dave adds the late hops and copper finings to the brew in the copper,

Rob and his dad finish cleaning out the mash tun.
