2007 Summer Pub of the
Season
The Arkwright Arms - Sutton-cum-Duckmanton
It
was with great pleasure that the Branch turned out to present this award - the
pub itself is no stranger to winning such accolades, but this is the first award
made to the new owners Kathy Shorrock and John Chadwick. They took over the
business almost a year ago, having previously assisted John’s folks, Judy and
Paul.
Conscious of the hard act they have had to follow (the Arkers was local Pub of
the Year 2004), Kathy and John have continued in the same vein as far as
possible. The traditional Easter and August Bank Holiday Beer Festivals remain,
as do the ‘Mini Micro Fests’ - showcasing the best of microbreweries over a
weekend. They have also continued to support CAMRA campaigns: in particular Mild
Month and the Cider & Perry initiative. Since trying out the sale of Real Cider
and Perry, the Arkwright now stocks them on a permanent basis, featuring around
10 different varieties.
Drinkers can also choose from a selection of Belgian beers - another recent
introduction to their repertoire. With all this choice, it is no surprise that
the Arkwright was able to beat off stiff competition and scoop the award. It is
a good community pub with a friendly welcome, and a commitment to promoting and
selling a selection of between five and eight Real Ales, often from local
breweries. There is always something going on; the beer quality and choice makes
the Arkwright Arms the perfect venue for a night out!

and John.
