2007 Spring Pub of the
Season
The Elm Tree – Heath
Our
minibus - dubbed 'The Snecklifter Express' for presentation night - set off at
7.50pm prompt, bound for Heath. On board were several members of
Chesterfield & District CAMRA, all eagerly awaiting a few beers and the award of
Spring Pub of the Season to the Elm Tree.
Martin and Katie have been at the
Elm Tree since September 2004 and in these two and a half years the pub has seen
many changes. Prior to their arrival, the pub itself faced an uncertain future;
the landlord was leaving and six villagers decided to take over, bringing in
Martin and Katie to run it for them. Last year, Martin became the seventh
director. This local input gives the pub a real community feel!
In May 2006 the pub underwent a
major refit, which - as well as altering the layout - resulted in the Elm Tree
doubling the choice of its cask ales, from two to four.
These are constantly changing,
although the Snecklifter seems to be on more often than not - and very nice it
is too! It is refreshing to see a pub that can combine good food and a friendly
welcome with really good beer. It is also great to see a pub that has been able
to expand its range of beers and caters to such a varied client base.
Our photo shows Branch chairman
Rhoda Waygood presenting the certificate to a thrilled Martin and Katie.
