Spring Pub of the Season 2006
The Barrack Hotel - Apperknowle
Apperknowle is situated between Eckington and Dronfield and whilst it may not
have the appearance of a disputed border town, in CAMRA circles it once was!
It was originally part of Sheffield Branch area, possibly leaving some on the
Chesterfield side to overlook it (although there were no barricades preventing
entry). Anyway the two branches subsequently agreed that Chesterfield was better
positioned to look after Apperknowle, and it was then that we uncovered the gem
that is the Barrack Hotel.
Run by John and Rachel Eggleston, the Barrack is a genuine free house and
accordingly, John can put any real ales on that he chooses. He very much
welcomes suggestions from customers as to beers they would like to try. There is
a strong emphasis on local brews.
Currently, there are four handpumps (this may become five in due course) and
three of these are for the regular beers – Abbeydale Moonshine, Kelham Island
Pale Rider and Tetley Bitter. The fourth is kept very busy dispensing a rotating
guest beer – including offerings from Acorn and Copper Dragon in recent weeks.
Home-cooked food is also available, lunchtime meals are restricted to Saturday
and Sunday and evening meals are available until 8pm, Tuesday to Saturday (book
for Saturday). The pub enjoys spectacular views across the Drone valley
towards Dronfield.
Together with the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere, these factors have led
to the Barrack deservedly being voted our Pub of the Season for Spring 2006.
