Pub of The Year 2004
The Arkwright Arms - Sutton-cum-Duckmanton

It’s always a pleasure to see excellent work generously rewarded and this was definitely the case when the Chadwick family were presented with Chesterfield & District CAMRA’s award for “Pub of the Year 2004”. The Arkwright Arms in Sutton-cum-Duckmanton (“Bottom Duck”) is no stranger to receiving similar awards as it has previously been our branch’s “Pub of the Season” on three separate occasions and, when the votes were counted at our last branch meeting, they were declared unanimous winners of this present accolade!

Paul & Judy Chadwick, along with sons John (the cellarman) and Dennis have been at The Arkwright Arms for 14 years and in that time they have created a friendly and popular pub that provides the local community and visitors alike with good food, a good atmosphere and (one of the main reasons for winning Pub of the Year) an excellent range of well kept Real Ales – well they have been in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide for the past 5 years!

You’ll find the pub on the A632 between Bolsover and Chesterfield so it’s also on a regular bus route, handy for when you are sampling those beers! The distinctive black and white frontage isn’t difficult to miss, so there are no excuses for going past without calling in for a visit!

Once you’re inside you will find a welcoming pub with coal fires in winter and a comfortable bar and lounge. There is a dining area at the back where you can have a meal or snack. Food is available every lunchtime and on Friday and Saturday evenings. We have eaten there on many an occasion, so I can vouch for the quality. They also do a cracking buffet too!

On presentation night, the pub was packed with family, friends, locals and a bus load of CAMRA members and this varied mix of clientele all had one thing in common ~ to congratulate The Arkwright on a job well done! Over the years they have supported CAMRA campaigns, have continued to provide drinkers with an ever changing supply of cask ales and have supported many local breweries and events. Every year they hold regular Beer Festivals (the next one is over the Easter Weekend) and also support Chesterfield’s own Beer Festival and the Barrow Hill Rail Ale Festival. They provided a good range of Cask ciders too during the recent Cider & Perry promotion during October 2003; one of the few pubs in the area to enter into the spirit of things.

The range of beers on Wednesday night’s visit included a selection to suit most palates; there was Wentworth Oatmeal Stout, lighter beers such as Deuchars IPA and their regular Marston’s Pedigree along with Old Rosie for the Real Cider drinkers.

Landlord Paul Chadwick smiled happily as he received the certificate from Branch Chairman Mary Keast. His speech reflected on how much he and his family enjoy their “work” and how much they appreciate this award as it was more like their hobby than actual work!
