Summer Pub of the Season 2003
The Victoria Inn - Brampton
Geoff
and Mavis Mason have been at the Victoria on Victoria Street West,
Brampton since January 2002. They have been in the trade since 1974 when Geoff
helped out in his uncle’s pub in Sheffield. Their first pub was the Reresby Arms
in Thrybergh (Rotherham).
Their first in Chesterfield was the New Inn on
Chatsworth Road where they built up a thriving trade including indoor games and
football teams. After six years out, they took over the Sheepbridge Sports and
Social Club on Newbold Road.
The Victoria (in common with many local pubs) has
suffered at the hands of brewery closures and consolidations. It was transferred
in recent memory from Tetley’s to Wards, and, following the shameful closure of
Ward’s Brewery, to Pubmaster. Despite these difficulties, since Geoff and
Mavis took over the Victoria last year, they have maintained the pub’s fine
reputation for top quality cask beer. Their immediate predecessors, Martin and
Linda Goacher were also awarded CAMRA’s Pub of the Season.
If you don’t know the Vic, call in for a pint of
cask conditioned Tetley’s Mild (a rare find in Chesterfield), or one of the
other regular beers, Stones, Tetley’s Bitter or Adnam’s Bitter. On
Thursday 8th May when Geoff and Mavis received their award, CAMRA members could
also
choose from Highgate Davenport’s Bitter and Caledonian Deuchars IPA. If you like
pub games – darts, dominoes or crib you can get a game.
The more athletic may use the pool table. If
you’re a team player you can compete for a place in the various games teams
which meet there; if you’re a gardener, talk to the resident expert allotment
holders; if you are of a charitable bent, you may raise money for charity; if
you’re a
know-all, you can take part in the quiz.
The Victoria is a rare survivor in Chesterfield –
a back street locals’ pub which welcomes visitors, and, above all, sells
excellent beer. It’s not a foodie’s pub - you won’t be asked whether or not you
want a drink with your meal; you won’t be able to complain that the bruschetta
is more redolent of Sardinia than of Napoli, but you’ll get a good cheese
sandwich on a Saturday lunch time.
