Summer Pub of the Season 2002
The Hare and Hounds - Barlow.
I’m just nipping out for some gammon and eggs... I may be some time”. Rumours that Captain Oates trained for the expedition to the South Pole hereabouts are totally without foundation...
Step into the Hare & Hounds and you get more than you might have bargained for. The last in a line of miners’ cottages up Commonside Road, the place has a cosy feel. The locals preside in the first room you enter. Proceed past the central bar, pint in hand, for panoramic views of the Cordwell Valley. Just to the left of the bar is where the famous local produce can be found, with the games room beyond. Outside there’s additional seating.
Run by Ron & Pauline Harris for over 20-odd years, this welcoming village local offers Stones and Draught Bass - and a fine pint it is, too. With a bit of crafty map-reading, on one of the many local walks it’s not too difficult to find yourself here (though you may prefer to get lost for extra dramatic effect).
Relax. Don’t rush your drink. On one side there’s the garlic potted meat devotees, flanked by the folk who swear by the quality of the cheese and free range eggs. If you want something for the weekend, try asparagus tips. Tab-hang and you’ll catch somebody going into raptures about the pickled cauliflower to the bloke who came in 2 hours ago for a choice bit of gammon. You have another pint to help you take it all in. If you have shares in Sainsbury’s, the voices in your head are saying ‘Sell. Sell!’
Seriously though, this Pub of the Season award proves that if you know your niche in the marketplace, you don’t necessarily have to install a forest of hand pumps to be appreciated. Congratulations to Ron, Pauline and their staff - it’s not just a pub, more of a way of life!
