Autumn Pub of the Season 2002
The Rutland - Chesterfield.
In the ever-changing town centre scene, the Rutland on Stephenson Place has been a haven – a permanent fixture on the real ale team sheet. Under the shadow of the crooked spire, it offers genuine choice & friendly hospitality to all comers, from office workers rubbing shoulders with shoppers to the serious scrum of weekend revellers.
There are 10 beers to choose from. The regulars on the bar include Boddies, Castle Eden, Abbot Ale, Pedigree & Landlord (alongside Weston’s Old Rosie cider) whilst a glance at the blackboard will confirm what’s available from the cellar – more often than not you’ll find the current Champion Beer of Britain, Deuchars IPA.
Jane & Ken Randall are in their second stint here, having spent 5 years building up the business under the Hogshead banner before a 2-year sojourn at the Salutation in Nottingham. Since moving back, they have secured the lease of the pub (now an Enterprise Inns house) whilst maintaining distinctive features like the bargain real ale jugs - 4 pints for the price of 3 - ideal for parties large or small, and buffets for any occasion.
The pub’s open all day every day & good food is available until 7pm. A selection of newspapers are available to scan through whilst you wait for your mates to turn up & at the top end of the pub it’s smoke-free. There’s a popular quiz every Tuesday night & the occasional beer festival, too!
So congratulations to Jane, Ken & their team – they got CAMRA salutations before their spell at the Salutation, so they have well & truly arrived – again!
